Biopsy Techniques
Numerous techniques are available for both surgical and non-surgical biopsies. In general surgery practice, we utilize all types of biopsies. The type of biopsy chosen depends on the location that needs to have a biopsy. Biopsy methods can be guided by ultrasound, CT scan, or mammogram. Biopsy methods can also be surgical with both incisional and excisional biopsies.
In breast masses for example, most biopsies are done with image guidance. Surgical biopsies are reserved for cases where a less invasive biopsy technique does not reveal a diagnosis. Surgical biopsies can be done in an office or outpatient setting and almost always provide a definitive tissue diagnosis.
Skin lesions can also be biopsied in numerous ways. These include punch, shave and excisional biopsy. Excisional biopsy gets the deepest and widest excision. In the case of skin lesions depth is an important tool in staging.
There are countless other areas that can need biopsy. It is important that each patient gets the right biopsy for them.
